Reading Comprehension Method - It Works!                                                                  JHHolloway Copyright  2001
As a  teacher, I have used this method on grades 2nd - 12th for several years - it works!.  It is gratifying to see 2nd graders become excited and eager to participate in question and answer (Q&A) discussion.  Students not only improve on reading, vocabulary and comprehension but are also able to apply thinking skills to those Q&A's that are implied. By using the following method, student's reading comprehension can be recorded and tracked.
Here are the steps to successful reading comprehension:
Reading Materials Required: Use reading comprehension stories, thematic units or articles with numbered questions.  Ten questions is a good place to start.  If you use articles (newspaper, book, magazine) you may have to make up the questions.
  1. Number the paragraphs of the story/article or page of thematic unit. (very important for Q&A reference)
  2. Read story as a group for pronunciation, vocabulary and story discussion.
  3. Explain the rules: If the students do not follow a, b, and C, answer will be marked "wrong". This is to eliminate guessing of answers.
  4. A fixed time is allowed for students to begin and complete Q&A - allowing for re-read time.
  5. After timed Q&A, correct by discussion and grade the papers as a group.  Having followed and referring to a, b, and c. the discussion is to "prove your answer".
  6. Time not permitting to grade immediately - grade papers later and return papers to students for viewing and/or discussion.

a. Q&A side, student must go back through the  story,  article or thematic unit and underline the answer.

b.  After student underlines the answer in the story, student must then put the question number they answered above or on the side of underline.

c. On the answer, student must write down the paragraph number or page number in which the answer was found.

Immediate documentation can be recorded and tracked for the individual student.  The student becomes very excited about their progress.
